Leaving Caleijão, a long and steep climb begins, but one that affords one of the best views of the Caleijão plateau and the Preguiça field. Arriving at Tope d’Vermelin, we’ll be greeted by one of the best-preserved dry stone paths in São Nicolau. The route to Tarrafal skirts the Fontainhas hill, always flanked by a deep valley that, after rain, forms several pools that reflect the blue sky against the rocky bottom. The village of Fontainhas, a cattle ranch, welcomes you with its doors open to the sea. From here, we begin to see Tarrafal and begin a long descent to the sea. The route ends in Tarrafal in front of the fishing museum, which is well worth a visit.
